We invite you to attend the monthly meetings of the Community Alcohol Coalition (CAC). This group of parents, professionals, educators, business owners, county government employees, students, marketing professionals, media representatives, and law enforcement meet on a monthly basis to discuss the ongoing efforts for creating awareness on the dangers of underage and/or binge drinking within our community. Each person brings so much to the table during brainstorming sessions about the best ways communicate our message - a message which may save lives.

Communities Mobilizing

for Change on Alcohol

 

You need the right tools

to make the right changes.

 Are you interested in helping your community make the right changes for a safer and healthier place for youth?  St. Mary’s County residents concerned with underage drinking are invited to participate in a FREE training for Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA). Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA) is a nationally recognized model program that activates a diverse citizenry with the skills and tools to reduce the flow of alcohol to youth from illegal sales by retail establishments, and from provision of alcohol to youth by other adults in the community. 

Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate to plan and implement effective strategies that:

• address policies and ordinances,
• build community,
• expand outreach and support efforts, and
• engage youth in youth-adult partnerships. 

 

This program is ideal for anyone, youth and adults, with a strong desire and willingness to lead community efforts in reducing alcohol use among youth.

 

CMCA will be offered on February 27th & 28th from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.  This training will be held at the College of Southern Maryland’s Leonardtown Campus, Building C, 22950 Hollywood Road Leonardtown, MD.  The training and materials are free but limited to 25 participants.  Registration is required and all program materials are provided through a grant from the State of Maryland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration.  Continental breakfast, lunch and snacks will also be provided.

Binge Drinking to Extreme Binge Drinking

 

 

More than Half of 12^th Grade Binge Drinkers

Drink Ten or More Drinks in a Row

More than half of 12^th grade binge-drinking episodes involve drinking ten or more drinks in a row, according to the first National study to examine extreme binge drinking among youth. Between 2005 and 2011, one in five U.S. high school seniors reported binge drinking—drinking five or more drinks in a row in the last two weeks. Slightly more than one-half (52%) of these binge drinkers were extreme binge drinkers, defined as having consumed 10 to 14 (24%) or 15 or more (28%) drinks in a row. The study also found that while high school grades and college plans did not predict binge drinking at any level, students in more rural areas were more likely to report extreme binge drinking of 15 or more drinks in a row than students in more urban areas.

Take Part in this Important Training

 

 

We invite you to participate in an important training for implementing Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA), an evidence-based model program for addressing youth alcohol use on June 27 & 28, 2013. The Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) helped design this model in cooperation with the University of Minnesota - and will deliver the first in a series of three training modules over the course of the next year. 

Why it's important 

Funding at the federal, state and local levels has become increasingly difficult to compete for and Substance Abuse Treatment and Prevention have been greatly impacted. The Maryland Strategic Prevention Framework (MSPF) grant funds the Community Alcohol Coalition (CAC) for five years, of which we are currently in the third year. These grant funds have a specific requirement to support "environmental prevention strategies" and the CMCA has been identified as a primary environmental strategy going forward. For these reasons it is important to build our capacity to implement the CMCA which will ensure the sustainability of the efforts put forth by the CAC.

This training is absolutely necessary in protecting our youth - to continue and enhance our efforts.   

 

What we've already accomplished

 

The St. Mary's County CAC has been recognized at the state level and looked to as a model for other Maryland coalitions implementing the Maryland Strategic Prevention Framework (MSPF). During this year's statewide prevention conference, hosted by the Maryland Association of Prevention Professional and Advocates (MAPPA) in October, 2012, we were asked to present on the progress and success of CAC. This was fairly significant considering the esteemed audience of seasoned preventionists and coalition leaders attending the conference, who were very receptive and many inquired about using our Can You Afford It? campaign in their jurisdictions. This offers the possibility of a broadly recognized "brand" across the state, developed by your efforts in supporting the CAC, which can be used to support additional prevention efforts including prescription drug abuse, over-the-counter drug misuse, tobacco, etc. The Can You Afford It? campaign vehicle will be used within the local overdose prevention plan, which is currently being developed. Additionally, the state asked for our representation in developing an Underage Drinking video sponsored at the federal level by the administration of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services. Our media campaign provided essential elements in the development of this video, due out in April. All of these are important achievements in considering our future challenges of competing for fewer and fewer available dollars at the federal, state and local levels.

 

 

The most important thing to remember ...

 

... this training will give you the tools to effectively reduce underage drinking in St. Mary's County and ensure the sustainability of our efforts as a true community effort. People of all ages - especially the youth of our community - are invited to participate in the training.

FREE Parent Workshops: Guiding Good Choices

Parenting tweens and teens is tough and important ... but you don't have to go it alone! JOIN US for five interactive workshops that will assist you.   WHAT IT IS:   Guiding good choices is an interactive series of five workshops designed for parents and caregivers of children ages 9-14. The program works with parents and caregivers to explore the challenges and skills in navigating our adolescents through these important and challenging years. Participants work together and with a certified facilitator to identify opportunities to reduce family conflict, build family bonds, establish clear and consistent guidelines and teach children skills to resist peer influence. The program will help to improve parent-child interactions, reduce adolescent substance abuse and reduce symptoms of depression in teens. In fact young adults whose parents attended Guiding Good Choices are: • 11% less likely to have alcohol related problems • 11% less likely to smoke cigarettes • 16% less likely to use illicit drugs • 10% more likely to be free of all measured substance abuse problems   WHEN: Thursday evenings from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM April 4, 11, 18, 25 May 2, 2013 WHERE: St. Mary's County Government, Potomac Building, Room 14 COST: FREE!
