Car crashes are the leading cause of death for everyone between the ages of 5-34. One third of all crash deaths involves a drunk driver.
Young men between the ages 21-34 made up only 11% of the U.S. population
in 2010, yet were responsible for 32% of all instances of drinking and driving.
85% of drinking and driving episodes were reported by people
who also reported binge drinking. Binge drinking means 5 or more drinks for men
or 4 or more drinks for women during a short period of time.
Alcohol played a role in nearly 32% of U.S. automobile
fatalities in 2009, the latest year for which figures are available. That's
10,839 deaths, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. An average of
one alcohol-impaired-driving fatality occurred every 48 minutes in 2009.
A typical DUI costs about $10,000 by the
time you pay bail, fines, fees and insurance, even if you didn't hit anything
or hurt anybody.
